Q: How did you come up with the name "Freddy'Sez'"?
A: There was a dress company named "Annie Sez" and I figured
if it was what Annie said, well, this is what Freddy said!
Q: What happened to your eye?
A:When I was 9 years old we were playing stickball down on 178th Street.
You know, we used to take a broom stick, bust it off and use it as a bat.
I was a pretty good hitter back then, too. I put the ball where they weren't.
Well, this one game...how do you say it? I was in the wrong place at
the wrong time. I was next up and my buddy who was up swung at the ball
real hard. The stick, which had a nail sticking out of it, flew out of his
hands and smacked me right in the eye. They rushed me to Fordham Hospital.
It's no longer there now. They then transferred me to a specialist. I was
lucky to keep my left eye. One of the few things I remember is getting ice
cream at the hospital. That was nice.
Maybe it was meant to be, though. Why do I say that? When I was 19,
World War II started and the U.S. got involved. Many of my friends either
enlisted or were drafted and never came back. I was classified 4F and was
saved. Who knows? I could have lost my life or had an amputated arm.
Instead of self-pity, I think God maybe was saving me. Even with one
eye, I am just as good as anyone else. It's a challenge for me and I'm just
as good as the next human being.
Q: What do you think of the Yanks this year?
A: How many superlatives can I think of? Tremendous. Great. Stupendous!
I'd have to look up more in a dictionary. It's an improved team even though
we had to give up Wells. The Boss wanted Clemens and got him. It was a hard
thing when Wells pitched against the Yanks. I'm looking for the Yanks to
repeat this year. This is a team of destiny.
Q: Who are your favorite present and past Yankee players?
A: I have several favorites from today's Yankees. Derek Jeter is one
of my first picks. The girls are crazy for him. I'm not a girl, but God,
he's good! He's like a...you can't call him a ballerina, but he's so graceful.
Twisting in the air and getting the guy out. I loved when Mattingly let
2 pitches go by when he batted and Jeter's doing that now.
I also like Paul O'Neil. He doesn't know who I am, but I've been trying
to get an autograph from him for a while. The last couple are Brosius and
David Cone. Both true gentlemen!
My favorite Yankee of all-time is the "Iron Horse", Lou Gehrig.
Q: What do you think of the Yankees moving from the Bronx?
A: I don't want them to leave the Bronx. NO WAY! It's all in my newsletters.
I'm very friendly with the Mayor, but if he pulls them out, I'll be very
unhappy. I'll still vote for him, but I'll be unhappy. He's very good to
me. If they go to New Jersey, I'll be a fan but I won't go to the games.
If they move to Manhattan, I'll go but I don't even want to see it happen.
People everywhere love Yankee Stadium. Out-of-towners especially. Fans from
Connecticut and New Jersey want the Yanks to stay in the Bronx too!
